Terms of Service
Last updated: 14 May 2026
1. About EconBase
EconBase ("EconBase", "we", "us", "our") is a not-for-profit community resource for econometricians, run by a group of academic volunteers based in the United Kingdom. The site is available at econbase.org (the "Service").
EconBase is provided free of charge. There are no paid tiers, no advertising, and no commercial use of your data.
If you have questions about these Terms, contact us at econbase.support@gmail.com.
2. Acceptance of these Terms
By accessing or using the Service, you agree to these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will post a notice on the site and update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the Service after changes means you accept the revised Terms.
3. Who can use EconBase
The Service is available to users worldwide. You may use the Service if you are at least 16 years old (the age of digital consent in the UK and most of the EU). By using the Service you confirm that you meet this requirement, or that you meet any higher age threshold required by your local law.
We reserve the right to refuse or terminate accounts at our discretion, particularly in cases of abuse, harassment, or violations of these Terms.
4. Accounts
Some features of the Service may require an account. When you create an account, you agree to:
- Provide accurate information;
- Keep your login credentials secure;
- Be responsible for activity that happens under your account;
- Notify us promptly if you suspect unauthorised access.
You may delete your account at any time by contacting us at econbase.support@gmail.com.
5. Content about academic works
The Service displays bibliographic information about academic works in econometrics, including author names, affiliations, paper titles, abstracts, and links to original sources. This information is drawn from public academic sources.
If you are an author whose work appears on the Service and you would like to correct, object to, or remove your record, please see the Privacy Policy for details on how to contact us.
6. User-generated content
EconBase may allow users to submit content such as information about econometrics papers, summaries, comments, links, and similar contributions ("User Content").
Your responsibilities
You are solely responsible for the User Content you submit. By submitting User Content, you represent that:
- You have the right to submit it;
- It does not infringe anyone else's copyright, trademark, privacy, or other rights;
- It is accurate to the best of your knowledge;
- It does not contain unlawful, defamatory, harassing, or misleading material.
Licence to EconBase
By submitting User Content, you grant EconBase a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, display, reproduce, and distribute that content as part of the Service, including making it available to other users. This licence exists so we can operate the site.
You retain ownership of your User Content. You can request removal of your contributions at any time by contacting us, though we may retain copies where necessary for legal or operational reasons (for example, in backups).
Content we may apply a licence to
We may, in future, apply a default open licence (such as Creative Commons CC BY 4.0) to certain types of structured contributions about published papers. If we do, we will make this clear at the point of submission.
Moderation
We may, but are not obliged to, review, edit, or remove User Content that violates these Terms or that we consider inappropriate. We are not responsible for User Content submitted by others.
7. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the Service for any unlawful purpose;
- Submit content that is defamatory, harassing, discriminatory, or threatening;
- Impersonate any person or misrepresent your affiliation;
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Service or its underlying systems;
- Interfere with or disrupt the Service (including via scraping at a rate that affects availability, automated attacks, or denial-of-service activity);
- Use the Service to distribute malware or harmful code;
- Submit personal data about other people without a lawful basis.
Reasonable, respectful scraping for academic research purposes is generally fine; if you're unsure, please get in touch.
8. Intellectual property
The Service itself — including its design, code, branding, and editorial content created by EconBase — is owned by the EconBase project and its contributors, and is made available to you under the terms set out here.
Where we use open-source software or third-party content, the relevant licences apply.
9. Third-party services and links
The Service is hosted on Google Cloud Platform. The Service may also contain links to third-party websites, including academic publishers, repositories such as arXiv and SSRN, and authors' personal pages. We are not responsible for the content or practices of those third parties.
10. Disclaimer of warranties
The Service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. EconBase is a volunteer-run community project. We do not warrant that:
- The Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free;
- Information on the Service (including bibliographic information and User Content) is accurate, complete, or current;
- The Service will meet your specific requirements.
Nothing on the Service constitutes academic, legal, financial, or professional advice.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we exclude all implied warranties.
11. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, EconBase, its volunteers, contributors, and affiliates will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive losses arising from or related to your use of the Service.
Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes liability that cannot be limited or excluded under UK law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
12. Termination
We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time, with or without notice, if we reasonably believe you have violated these Terms.
You may stop using the Service at any time. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (including content licences, disclaimers, and limitations of liability) will survive.
13. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales, except where mandatory consumer protection law gives you the right to bring proceedings elsewhere (for example, EU consumers who may have the right to bring proceedings in their country of residence).
