What these two counts mean. By arXiv paper takes the papers in our arXiv corpus that we matched to a journal publication, and counts the journals they landed in. Every paper counted is one we hold and traced to a journal, which makes this the tighter number. By author takes the authors with at least N papers in our arXiv corpus and counts every journal publication OpenAlex knows for them. That is a different question — where econometricians publish, rather than where econometrics arXiv papers land — and it is much wider, because it covers whole careers including work well outside econometrics. A paper by two qualifying authors is counted once. The threshold matters because author identification is imperfect: a one-paper author is often a splinter record or a namesake, a five-paper author almost never is, so the default is 5. "Journal" excludes conference proceedings, book series, working-paper series and repositories, so SSRN, RePEc and IMF Working Papers never appear. Method: docs/05-author-pages.md.
